Loudspeaker/Bullhorn system for ships and harbours.

Postby Cogliostro » Fri Aug 21, 2009 12:14 am

Electronics item. Allows a ship or ground control to hail and issue commands to other ships within the short range of the loudspeaker. Input text is converted to all caps. :D

Your longboat is sailing peacefully when:

You hear a very loud voice: "ATTENTION UNIDENTIFIED LONGBOAT, YOU ARE IN BLACKROCK TERRITORIAL WATERS. IMMEDIATELY DOCK TO THE HARBOUR FOR INSPECTION. FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL BE CONSIDERED A CRIMINAL BREACH AND DEALT WITH BY FORCE."

Two ships equipped with the loudspeaker systems can talk to each other without docking if they are in close proximity. No way to select a target ship. All ships within range will hear the message you broadcast.

I really like this idea - makes sense and easier than docking to another ship, who then thinks perhaps you are going to attack them.

Good, I like.

One could similar use such a system in a town, so that annoucements could be made from a control room and everyone would hear it...

What would it be made of?
And how can we control where this will be used? If it was only on ships we could make it like one more upgrade of our ship. Instead of building a seal, you would build this.

But you referred a ground control too, so that means like harbours? What I mean is, to be sure that we don't allow people to build these things out of ships and out of harbours.

Not a bad idea, this is similar to bells and horns that have been disscussed in the past for towns to warn nearby towns of attacks.

Yeah, I too envisioned it in harbours and on ships only.

IMO, it's unnecessary.
You can build a radio receiver on your boat ;p

*In a hold or cabin.

So you can't listen to them.

It's not realistic having a loudspeaker on small boat. Big ships have almost always a radio, and it's usual in cabin. Then somebody of crew could be sent to hearing a radio.

Or maybe should we invent a walkie - talkie instead?

Why isn't that realistic? There's nothing unrealistic about having one on any boat at all.

It's not realistic to be able to carry innumerable crossbows with your bare hands.

Being able to speak into a bullhorn or loudspeaker = realistic.

Three thumbs up for this idea, so long as it is limited to boats and harbours.

You can't force others to have radios though, and a very large percent of ships do not have them.

The point of thise bullhorn was to be able to give orders, or communicate with other ships in an area wether they have a radio or not. Also, you don't have to figuere out what channel they are one, and you transmission only affects a limitied area, it doesn't broadcast to all towns like a radio transmission would.

It's important that the loudspeakers can't and aren't intended to replace a ship radio, because the loudspeaker's effective range is pathetic compared to a radio and the stuff Elros just mentioned.

Of course, you should hear were the sound comes from.

Like, "Oh, it's from the harbour, not that ship!"
"An those with little fuel, could tie a pack of bears in front of their limousine, with whip and crossbow in hands to keep them in line."
