Instead of having people type different food items into the game and just listing the foods, it might be neat to have a form that would let people submit different recipes for moderation. Make it so that an adequate description of foods and tools required is required. If that food has already been submitted and not implemented, allow for variations to be submitted. There should be a screen to let people see what suggestions have already been made.
If you would want to boost the complexity, you could have all existing food types be in a drop down, along with tool types. A food could be submitted and then from a moderation screen be directly be added to the game with admin approval.
I think either of these would put the majority of the work in the players hands.

It would be nice if the database and interface could handle projects whose outputs were based on their inputs. So you could have a, say, kitchen table project of something like "Create entree" or similar.
You could then pick two/three ingredients and a modifier from a list of things like "with, ala, in " or nothing, and the result would be something like "X <MODIFIER> Y" for whatever X and Y you used to make it. Thusly:
Noodles with meatballs.
Fresh dung cake.
Grilled meat salad.
Smoked trout in tomato sauce. XD
etc, etc, ad infinitum.
