Just read it all within a few hours, and it's a good read, with plenty of plot twists for a sciencey type person.

John Ransom's "Andersonville diary". The ability of human being to go through horror and get over it always amazes me.

Is that the one about the US Civil War? I saw the PBS film version that was just called "Andersonville" from a long time ago but I never read the book. That was really good, too. Captain Kirk was in it.

Yes, the original diary of a prisoner, which Mackinlay Kantor was highly inspired by when he wrote "Andersonville" novel. I read it like ten years ago, didn't know there was a film. I might watch it sometime!
If anyone knows of a good, similar themed book from the Confederate perspective, I'd love some recommendations. My interest is not as much in battles and tactics as in daily life of people during conflicts.

I just looked on YouTube and there is a bunch of stuff about Andersonville. There's a movie about it but it's not PBS (I don't think it is).

Not a book but a short story I just read on Slate. It's a must read. If anyone understands the title, please enlighten me.
“It Came From Cruden Farm”
A short story about humanity’s first encounter with a very disturbing alien.
