Religion Quiz

Postby RedQueen.exe » Sat Mar 17, 2012 1:29 pm

Didn't want to derail the other thread with this, but I thought this was kind of fun. Christian Science Monitor runs a religious quiz called "Are you smarter than an atheist?"

Atheists and agnostics, Jews and Mormons are among the highest-scoring groups in a 32-question survey of religious knowledge by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life. On average, Americans got 16 of the 32 questions correct. Atheists and agnostics got an average of 20.9 correct answers. Jews (20.5) and Mormons (20.3). Protestants got 16 correct answers on average, while Catholics got 14.7 questions right.

I got a 30/32! :) Guess the Catholic upbringing didn't hurt me too much, lol.

Both catholic. And not American and that quiz is very American. The US Supreme Court Rulings are not fair questions.

Atheïst and semi-agnostic. I never studied the holy books, so I got those wrong mostly.

Me: 28/32
Protestant and American

The ones I got wrong were ones I had the answers narrowed down between two. I don't know who/what Maimonades was/were. I'm sorry we didn't study the First Great Awakening in history class.

I've also taken this before, although it's been awhile.

I couldn't remember that either, I just remember which religion he was of. The only one I got right by guessing was the Great Awakening one.

I don't think I took this one before, but I know I've taken a couple like it. I had an unfair advantage on the ancient mythology ones (though there weren't many of them). I loved reading about ancient religions even when I was firmly Catholic, and I still like picking names for pets and such from Greek, Norse, and Egyptian gods or mythical figures.

The questions aren't deep. I would say that people who have a lot of general knowledge (as well as knowledge of the US political system) will do well on the quiz. American Protestants and Catholics may not know much about Buddhism and Islam, but I bet they know more than average about their own doctrines.

I had no idea about the preacher participating in the First Great Awakening

:D (I admit, I had to guess a few - I don't know a lot about US laws and about the "First Great Awakening")

I'm an atheist - BECAUSE I learned a lot about many religions and BECAUSE my whole family is catholic, and I soon realized that this faith is something I can't agree with.

(Edit: On second thought, I'm not sure I'm surprised by either. ) It doesn't surprise me that the scores are high here, but I am surprised at how low the average scores from the official surveying were.

Actually, that was the quiz that first was the impetus for CREATING the Religion thread, RedQueen.

Might have gotten another one right if I realized sooner that "Job" is the guy I know as "Hiob".

31/32, of which one was a lucky guess(so I guess 30/32, then :) ). The part with the american constitution was fairly easy to figure out, even for a non-american.

I am a Liberal Christian leaning traditional Unitarian Universalist who usually attends a United Methodist church.

A little while back, I embarked on my own spiritual journey in which I learned as much as I could about other religions.
Really, that's what probably lead me to Unitarian Universalism and the belief that each and every religion has some value to the people of the world and the search for complete truth.
