Do you need a saddle to ride steeds?

Pretty self explanatory. I was just curious if you needed one. I've never actually owned one before and I'd like to but I don't know the details that go into it. Can you ride steeds with no saddle or does the saddle need to exist before you can? I get the impression from the wiki it just might make it easier or something.

You do need a saddle. Without it you just have a friendly animal.

Reins help speeding the steed up.

There must be an explanation in the wiki somewhere.

I did some updating to these things in the wiki a while ago, but I did not add much detail because I hadn't had the chance to do much with them in game. Most were unconnected, empty stubs at that time. I will try to add a little more soon.
